For a straightforward Missouri sale

  • Locate the original Missouri certificate of title and confirm the seller is the owner shown.
  • Check the title for a recorded lien and obtain the required lien release when applicable.
  • Do not erase, white-out or guess at a title assignment. Review the state’s assignment instructions first.
  • Keep a copy of the completed transaction documents.
  • Missouri says a private seller generally must report a sale or transfer within 30 days using a Notice of Sale or Bill of Sale.

Missing title

The titled owner may need to apply for a duplicate using Form 108. A bill of sale does not automatically replace a properly assigned title for an ordinary vehicle sale.

Recorded lien

If the title shows a lienholder, disclose it before scheduling. Missouri provides Form 4809 and official instructions for an applicable lien release.
