Lost the Missouri title? Start with the owner record.
A missing title does not create a general no-title sale. Identify the titled owner, lien status, vehicle age and condition before deciding what process applies.
- Confirm the titled owner.The person requesting the sale should match the Missouri ownership record or have documented authority to act for that owner.
- Check for a lien.A recorded lien can change whether a replacement title can be issued and what release documents are required.
- Use the ordinary replacement process first.Missouri says that when a title is missing, the owner must apply for a duplicate and an ordinary sale is not valid without a properly assigned title.
- Do not assume an exception.Missouri has a limited statutory process for an eligible scrap-metal operator acquiring certain inoperable vehicles at least ten years old. Eligibility and operator requirements must be confirmed for the specific transaction.
- Review before scheduling.Send the ownership situation with the vehicle details. A request is not an accepted purchase or pickup appointment.
