Kansas may hold a paper or electronic title depending on lien status. Confirm the titled owner and lien record before attempting a transfer.
- Confirm the titled owner.The seller should be the owner shown on the Kansas vehicle record or have acceptable documented authority.
- Determine whether the title is electronic.Kansas maintains electronic titles when a lien is recorded, so a missing paper document may not mean the title itself is lost.
- Check the lien.An active lien changes the supporting documents and whether a paper replacement title can be issued.
- Use the replacement-title process.Kansas provides Form TR-720B for eligible replacement, duplicate, secured or reissued title transactions. County treasurers process many title matters.
- Complete the assignment before transfer.Kansas generally requires the title to be assigned to the new owner. Do not rely on possession or an incomplete bill of sale as automatic authority to sell.
